Physician-Led Medical Insight for Legal Clarity

Attorneys frequently ask whether a medical condition that develops after an accident can reasonably be linked to the traumatic event itself. One such question is whether acute appendicitis can be caused by blunt abdominal trauma.

At Velaris Consulting Group, we regularly assist attorneys in evaluating complex medical causation questions. The following case illustrates how medical literature and clinical reasoning can provide clarity.

Case Overview

Our client was a 23-year-old woman involved in a motor vehicle collision. She was traveling in the far right lane when a driver in the middle lane made an illegal right-hand turn, crossing directly into her path. Her vehicle struck the other car broadside.

During the collision:

  • The airbag failed to deploy
  • The client was thrown forward across the steering wheel
  • She sustained impact to her head, chest, and abdomen

Initially, she experienced neck and low back pain and returned home without seeking immediate medical care. Approximately six hours later, she developed severe right lower quadrant abdominal pain and presented to the emergency room.

She was diagnosed with acute appendicitis, hospitalized, and underwent an emergency appendectomy.

The Legal Question

The attorney asked an important and medically nuanced question:

Was the client’s acute appendicitis related to the automobile accident?

Medical Analysis & Literature Review

Medical literature documents cases of acute appendicitis following blunt abdominal trauma, including trauma sustained during automobile collisions.

Based on the facts of this case, it was our medical opinion that the client experienced significant blunt force trauma to the abdomen, likely caused by:

  • The steering wheel
  • The lap and shoulder restraints
  • Or a combination of both

We concluded that this trauma precipitated the onset of acute appendicitis.

One peer-reviewed article states:

“Our experience with three cases of acute appendicitis following blunt force trauma led to an extensive review of the world literature on the subject. We believe that abdominal trauma might be causative of acute appendicitis.”

Additional medical journal articles further support this conclusion.

Clinical Significance

The literature also notes that:

  • Trauma-associated appendicitis is more common in children and young adults
  • Acute appendicitis should be considered following direct abdominal trauma
  • Especially when symptoms include:
    • Right lower quadrant abdominal pain
    • Nausea
    • Anorexia

All of these symptoms were present in this case.

Our Conclusion

Based on:

  • The mechanism of injury
  • The timing of symptom onset
  • And established medical literature

It was our professional medical opinion that there was a direct causal relationship between the automobile accident and the client’s acute appendicitis.
